After several weeks of mixed reports and Topsy-Turvy dealings on the actual representative of the APC in Kaduna Central Senatorial district ahead 2019 elections, the party seems to have finally settled for a candidate.
Who Has The Party Picked?
Uba Sani, the candidate supported by Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai and the state’s All Progressive Congress was given the ticket. In a document seen by Political Stew, Uba Sani’s name was submitted as the Senatorial candidate of the Kaduna Central district.
The APC National Working Committee had previously insisted on the automatic candidacy and return of Shehu Sani, the Senator currently representing the district, but this didn’t sit well with El-Rufai and the Kaduna State APC.
Was A Primary Election Held In Kaduna Central?
A primary election, organised by the Kaduna State APC saw the emergence of Uba Sani as candidate with Shehu Sani conspicuously absent from the election.
Results of the election had seen the Political Adviser of El-Rufai, Uba Sani pip other aspirants to the ticket. Shehu Sani, reacting to his absence, said the election was illegal and not recognised by the party’s National Working Committee.
What Role Did El-Rufai Play In Uba Sani’s Emergence?
After news came out about Senator Sani being the choice of the APC NWC, El-Rufai, like other governors who were not satisfied with the conduct of the committee in their states, visited President Muhammadu Buhari to reveal their displeasures.
The outcome of the meeting was not clearcut but subsequent reports had shown that the meeting did not go as expected, with former Acting National Publicity Secretary of the Party, Yekini Nabena stating that Sen. Sani is the party’s candidate.
What The APC Said
Just a few days ago, an appeal committee set by the party, led by former Edo State Governor, Oserheimen Osunbor said the only candidate recognised by the party is Shehu Sani.
Other members of the committee are; Mike Ugwa (Secretary), Musa Gwadabe, Reuben Famuyibo and Abdulrahman Adamu.
What Next For Shehu Sani?
The coming days will be important for Sani as his next move will be made known. He is one of a few candidates who stayed back in the APC after a wave of defection saw 14 Senators leave the party.
