Senator Muhammed Abba Aji has emerged winner of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Borno Central Senatorial Candidate defeating two of his opponents with a wide margin at the just concluded Senatorial Primary election held in Maiduguri, Borno State Capital.
Abba-Aji scored 597 votes to beat his closest rival, the youthful Grema Terab who garnered 242 votes leaving the third aspirant, Bukar Kachalla with only 4 votes.
Speaking to journalists shortly after he was declared a winner by the Chairman of the Electoral Commission – Dr. Andy Aghadi, Abba-Aji said his party is in a better position to snatch the Borno Central Senatorial Seat from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to him, his victory at the primary election is a clear indication that the PDP in Borno State has put forward the best candidate that can defeat any political party opponent ahead of the 2019 elections.
“I’m more than ever convinced that my party – the PDP is set to sweep the elections come 2019. I’m very grateful to All-mighty Allah for this victory. This victory is not just for me but the entire people of Borno Central whom Intend to represent at the National Assembly.
“I’m also set to emerge victorious at the general election as Senator representing the people of Borno Central Senatorial District. The liberation of my people from the shackles of lack and poverty through quality legislation will be my focus when elected ” Abba-Aji said.
Senator Abba- Aji who had his first stint at the Senate in 2003 revealed that his return to the upper legislative house will apart from joining his colleagues to make good laws for Nigeria , he will focus on the well being of his constituents and mount pressure on the executive to implement programmes and projects of the North East Development Commission
The Senator was a governorship aspirant in the ruling APC but he defected to the PDP two weeks ago explained that the Boko insurgency has left thousands of lives lost and many properties in his constituency destroyed noting that “there’s urgent need for the Federal government to immediately come to the aid of my people.
“If elected, I will push for a situation where all Internally displaced persons in my constituency will be adequately relocated to their homes and be provided with a means of livelihood.
“My focus will be on the executive to push for implementation of programmes and projects of the North East Development Commission so that the common people in my constituency will have a reason to smile again,” Abba-Aji said.
On whether or not the division within the PDP will hinder his chances of winning, Senator Abba Aji said the party is working assiduously to resolve all disputes with aggrieved persons within its fold.
” The PDP has appointed Hon Baba Basharu – the longest-serving PDP Chairman in Borno State to lead the resolution of all internal issues within Borno PDP. We are hopeful the PDP will be united and strong in the coming days and weeks. This hopefully will lead to the withdrawal of cases currently in court ” Abba-Aji said.
However, Senator Abba Aji will be facing a stiff contest with the incumbent governor Kashim Shettima who is now the Borno Central Senatorial Candidate of the APC. .That may be high hill task for Abba Aji but political observers recall how the then incumbent governor Ali Modu Sheriff who also served eight years like governor Shettima lost the same Borno Central Senatorial election to the then PDP candidate., late Senator Ahmad Zanna.
The questions on the lips of many political observers is that; will history repeat itself? Only time will tell.
