Manir Dan-Iya has emerged the new Deputy Governor of Sokoto state following the approval of his appointment by the Sokoto State House of Assembly on Thursday.
Who is Manir Dan-Iya?
Dan-Iya is the immediate-past state commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Sokoto State.
He was declared winner of the recent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary election in Sokoto state after scoring a total of 2,175 votes.
However, Dan-Iya reportedly stepped down to affirm Tambuwal’s candidature. Also the Independent National Electoral Commission confirmed the substitution of Manir Dan’Iya, earlier submitted as the party flag bearer, with the name of Tambuwal.
Political observers had suspected that Dan-Iya, who was Tambuwal’s Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, had only held the PDP governorship ticket for Tambuwal in case he (Tambuwal) lost the party’s presidential ticket.
When was he confirmed?
He was confirmed as Deputy Governor of Sokoto on Nov. 22 by the Sokoto State House of Assembly.
The motion for approval was which confirmed Dan was adopted by the Deputy Majority Leader Alhaji Ibrahim Sarki (PDP-Sokoto North II) at plenary.
Speaking on the motion Sarki urged his colleagues to confirm the appointment of Dan-Iya due to his qualities.
“In view of the provisions of section 191 subsections (3)(c) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended.
“Governor Aminu Tambuwal submitted the name of Alhaji Manir Dan-Iya for confirmation as deputy governor of the state.
“The person so recommended for appointment is an astute politician with impressive grassroots appeal, he will bring his experience to bear in the governance and overall development of the state,” he said.
The motion was then unanimously adopted when put to a voice vote by the Speaker Alhaji Salihu Maidaji who presided over the plenary.
Why was Dan-Iya appointed?
Dan-Iya was appointed to replace the former deputy Governor of Sokoto, Ahmed Aliyu who resigned on November 13. This to enable Aliyu concentrate on his campaign after securing the All Progressives Congress(APC) governorship ticket for the 2019 poll in the state.
